Nishon Rashakrishnan plays #1 Singles for the team and has done a great job this season.

Nick Giglio and Brendan Fitzpatrick play #1 Doubles and have won most of their matches so far.

John Delpadre picked up the sport this year and is learning fast at the Wolverines #3 Singles.

Erik Burke and DJ Cavicchi are doing well for BA as the #2 Doubles.

Matt Buckley is having a great year as the Wolverines #2 Singles.

Tennis is Back!

The 2010-2011 Tennis season has been a great one so far. The team has had a few matches, including a big 3-2 win over Gould Academy. Here are a few notes from the match...

The tennis team’s record improved this week to 1-1 with their 3-2 win over Gould Academy. Nishon Radhakrishnan (Amherst, NH) played number one singles while Matt Buckley (Canton, MA) played number two and both walked away with wins. Brendan Fitzpatrick (Winthrop, MA) and Nick Giglio (Bedford, MA) who play number one doubles also won their match. While John Delpadre (North Providence, RI) came up short in his singles match, it was a real nail-biter. Erik Burke (Manchester, NH) and Dean Cavicchi (Plymouth, MA) also debuted in their doubles match and lost a close set.

Coach Travis was proud of their effort saying, “it was an impressive effort all around. With two under our belts we are looking to secure a winning record of 2-1.”

Bridgton Academy is looking for a Sports Information Intern for the upcoming academic year. This is a great opportunity to get an intensive year of writing and photographing Wolverine games, working with student athletes on a number of levels, getting your work published both in print and online, and having a great year in general.

Position Available: Sports Information Intern

Bridgton Academy, the nation’s premier postgraduate boarding school for young men, seeks a Sports Information Intern for the 2009-2010 academic year. Bridgton Academy's mission is to provide a program for young men in a unique, one-year postgraduate environment to prepare for the rigors of college and beyond.

Sports Information interns are fully involved in all aspects of Bridgton’s postgraduate year. The program is very demanding of one’s time, talents, and energy. The internship is designed to be an introduction to the sports information profession, especially in the private boarding school/college environment, focusing on a combination of responsibilities, including sports reporting/writing, photography, videography, web content management, sports information management, team or club coaching, and residential life leadership. Interns will receive structured support and career advice from faculty mentors.

The Intern position is a nine month appointment: August 15, 2009 – May 15, 2010. Compensation includes stipend, residence hall accommodations, school term meals, and school vacations.

Wolverines Tennis Team Members Receive Awards

Four of this year's Wolverines Tennis team members received awards during last weekends Graduation events. Mike Wheeler, Rob Lundberg, Nick Osgood, and Nick Thieme all were recognized either Friday or Saturday and we wanted to wish a special Congratulations to them all and best of luck with all of their future endeavors!!

Wolverines Fall to Kents Hill 3-2

The Wolverines have unfortunately been on the wrong end of some highly contested 3-2 match results this season with their most recent coming last Saturday when they traveled to Kents Hill. Nick Thieme won his #2 singles match as did teammates Matt Hill and Dave Martin at #1 doubles in straight sets, however Kents Hill was able to take the remaining three matches to secure the win. Rob Lundberg lost a marathon three setter (3+ hours) in his singles match, while Nick Osgood fell at #3 singles as well. Sam Davis and Mo Erakat also lost a heartbreaking three set match at #2 doubles.

The Wolverines will hope to come up on the better end of their next match when they play host to Gould Academy on Wednesday, April 29th, with the start time currently scheduled for 2:30 PM.

The Bridgton tennis team traveled to North Yarmouth yesterday for a make-up match with the rebuilding North Yarmouth Academy Panthers. By the end of the afternoon, the Wolverines had snapped their string of 3-2 losses with a convincing 5-0 win. Leading the way was Nick Osgood at #3 singles, who, in an impressive display of power tennis, bested his opponent in 35 minutes, 6-0, 6-2. Nick Thieme, playing at #2, dispatched a game Chris Meixell, 6-2, 6-0. Playing the last match of the day, top singles player Rob Lundberg continued his strong play with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Chris Whiting, the Panthers' #1 singles player.

In doubles, the #1 team of Matt Hill and Dave Martin pushed their record as a team to 2-0 with a quick 6-0, 6-1 win over Simon Hebert and Sam Leishman. At second doubles, Mike Wheeler and Zach Johnson also pushed their record to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of the Panther second doubles team.

The Wolverines will travel to Readfield, Maine on Saturday, April 25th for a 1:30 match against rival and defending MAISAD champs Kents Hill School.

Wolverine Tennis Hanging In…

The Bridgton Academy tennis team has endured a record number of tough 3-2 losses this season. On Monday, the team dropped its third consecutive 3-2 decision to the improving Hebron Lumberjacks.

And while such close losses sting, the upside to them is the fact that the team is still fighting each day to pull out wins. Battling line-up changes daily due to illness, college visits, and other extracurriculars (rugby, Big Brothers, etc.), the team has worked to find a productive stride, and with four matches remaining, the team remains committed to putting its best foot forward.

Of note, Rob Lundberg has been a virtual lock in singles. Playing at #1 and #2, the lanky Californian has used a huge serve and a heavy forehand to win all but one of his singles matches this year. Nick Thieme has also contributed athleticism and a wide repertoire of facial expressions in wins against Hyde and Hebron. Third singles has been a tough position to fill on this team, but Nick Osgood and Dave Martin have worked hard against some solid opponents over the season.

In doubles, there has been a real revolving door, and the team has benefited from strong performances from Matt Hill, Dave Martin, Sam Davis, Julian McClain, Mike Wheeler, Kevin Van Lenten, Zach Johnson, and Alex Monetta.

The Wolverines will look to get back into the win column at North Yarmouth Academy on Wednesday, April 22nd. After that, matches against perennial rival Kents Hill and this year’s MAISAD front-runner, Gould Academy, will round out the schedule.

Wolverine Tennis Gets First Win of the Season

The Bridgton Academy tennis team traveled to Hebron on a sunny but cold and blustery April day to face the Hebron Lumberjacks in a MAISAD match. Playing solid tennis up and down the lineup, the Wolverines moved to 1-2 on the season with a 5-0 victory.

The match was not as lopsided as the final score appeared, as three matches went to a third set and a fourth featured a tiebreaker. Featuring a shuffled line-up, #1 singles player Nick Thieme outlasted a game AJ Bloomingdale, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 in a well-played match. At #2 singles, Rob Lundberg rode his big serve and some strong groundstrokes to beat Inigo Nieves, 6-2, 7-6, while Nick Osgood enjoyed the shortest match of the day, dispatching Hebron’s Dan Kim, 6-4, 6-2.

The doubles matches provided some good entertainment, as the #1 team of Matt Hill and Dave Martin, pairing for the first time, stretched to defeat Brett Bisesti and Tom Pagnozzi, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. At #2 doubles, Sam Davis and Julian McClain earned a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win to close out the match.

The Wolverines will look to even its record on Tuesday afternoon with its first home match, against Fryeburg Academy, at 3:30.

April 9th--Wolverine Netters Play Well, Drop Opener

The Bridgton Academy tennis team traveled to Gould Academy to take on the Huskies on Wednesday, April 9th. Facing the preseason MAISAD favorites outside on a cold April afternoon, the team played well, but lost 4-1. Despite the score, several of the matches were quite close, and left both coaches with a sense that this year’s squad can enjoy a successful campaign. At first singles, Matt Hill played very well in a loss to last season’s MAISAD singles finalist, Dachuan Zhu, while Dave Martin, at #2 singles and playing his first team match, dropped a hard-fought two-setter to Gould’s patient Sam Allen. Filling in for traveling ruggers, Zach Johnson showed off a dogged style in a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Husky third singles player, Derek Nagy.

In doubles, first team Nick Osgood and Nick Thieme played a strong match before falling to their Gould counterparts in the third set (2-6, 6-2, 5-7). And in a high point, the second doubles team of Sam Davis and Julian McClain, in their first formal match play, handled the Gould teamof Cohan and Bai, 6-2, 7-5.

The tennis team plays next on Friday at Hyde School.
